Moisture Production in UK Homes: Are Our Assumptions Still Accurate?

Speaker: Jalal Ahmed, UCL
Date: Friday 27 February, 1:00 pm

Indoor humidity levels are heavily influenced by everyday activities such as cooking, drying clothes, showering, and exercising. Because of this, understanding how much moisture people produce at home is important for designing buildings and predicting how they perform. Moisture production rates are typically taken from research papers and guidance documents, but it’s unclear whether these figures still reflect how people actually live today. Behaviours that influence indoor moisture — how often we cook, the types of meals we prepare, how we dry clothes, and so on — have changed over time. As these habits change, the moisture generated inside homes may also be changing.

In this webinar, Jalal Ahmed (UCL) will explore emerging evidence that UK lifestyles are evolving in ways that could challenge the moisture‑production data currently used in research and practice. The session will consider the implications for building assessment, diagnostics, moisture risk evaluation, and hygrothermal modelling, and will highlight why updated evidence is becoming increasingly important.

Join us to learn why understanding real‑world behaviour is crucial for improving the way we model, diagnose, and manage moisture in buildings.
