Speaker: Graham Atherton, National Aspergillosis Centre Communication and Engagement Lead, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust
Date: Friday 30th January 2026, 1-2 pm GMT

This talk explores how 25 years of engaging patients with aspergillosis transformed care for a complex, environmentally driven lung disease, and why specialist, trusted interpretation proved as important as medical treatment. Drawing clear parallels with damp and mould exposure in housing, it shows how listening to lived experience, joining up fragmented systems, and providing impartial advice can prevent harm long before disease becomes severe. The lessons from a rare disease are used to inform a scalable, compassionate approach to a growing public health challenge.
