Free UKCMB webinar: Green aesthetics, damp realities: Indoor plants and humidity in focus
Speaker: Jorge Ignacio, UCL Researcher, The Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources
Date: Friday 31st October 2025, 10-11 GMT

Indoor plants are often celebrated as natural allies in healthier homes and workplaces. From wellness blogs to product marketing, we’re told that peace lilies, snake plants, and lush green walls can soak up excess humidity and improve our air. But what does the science actually say?
This webinar presents the results of a systematic review of empirical studies, spanning controlled chambers, classrooms, offices, and households. The findings overturn a popular belief: rather than absorbing moisture, indoor plants almost always increase relative humidity (sometimes dramatically!) through evapotranspiration. While this can be beneficial in dry environments, in humid ones it may worsen problems like mould, dust mites, and poor indoor air quality.
Free UKCMB webinar: Can AI predict damp risk?
Speaker: Dr Gulala Aziz, Architect and Researcher specialising in housing performance and damp risk prediction
Date: Friday 21st November 2025, 10-11 GMT

This webinar explores how artificial intelligence can help move housing providers from a reactive to a proactive approach in tackling dampness. By learning from past damp inspection data and Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) records, the model estimates the probability that homes may develop damp problems. These risk predictions highlight where issues are more likely to occur, enabling housing teams to focus inspections, plan preventative measures, and ultimately improve living conditions for residents.
